Barclays ePDQ: Retiring March 2026

One of the popular payment providers, Barclays ePDQ has announced they are retiring their service in early 2026 after over 10 years of providing secure online payments across the globe. This has lead many bussinesses to be alarmed, and upon recieving the information from Barclays will now need to go on a search for a new payment provider for their business.

What is ePDQ?

ePDQ is the name for a suite of elements offered by Barclays all centered around taking credit and debit card payments from your customers. This can involve the use of the Barclays ePDQ Online Gateway, virtual terminal (for MOTO over the phone or keyed in payments) and various other payment options.

Why do I need to act now?

Acting quicker means you can compare quotes from various other providers, and allow for time for contracts to be signed, integrations with your software to be updated and any issues to be ironed out. It will also take time for staff to be trained to use any different management system, even if this is purely for reconcilliation of payments between your website and payment terminal. If you use MOTO payments, staff will need different logins and a different management portal in order to do these.

Also you will need to ensure payments and the flow of money into your actual bank works with a new provider, all teething issues which can be more stressful the sooner the deadline is approaching!

Is there any good news?

Yes there is, modern payment providers offer new and exciting features. Many of them offer updated plugins which offer a much more reliable and less intensive integration process with many beneifts. Some of these include an off-loading of PCI compliance using “iframes” where card details never touch your systems, yet to your customers they won’t notice the different.

Another big point is many providers offer simple addition of Apple Pay and Google Pay – two of the biggest asks we see from people looking for a new payment provider and a big driver of sales, especially with Black Friday around the corner!
